Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Bridgewater, NJ
Common questions from homeowners in Bridgewater and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often should a dryer vent in Bridgewater actually get cleared?
Once a year works for most households here. Bump that to every six or eight months if you run four or more loads a week, dry pet bedding, or have a family of five pushing laundry daily. Second-floor laundry in the 1990s-and-newer colonials and townhomes near Route 287 tends to need attention sooner. A vertical run through framing to the roof holds lint that a short basement run would have pushed out. Houses that sat a few years between cleanings usually need a longer visit the first time.

Which warning signs point to a clogged vent?
The usual first clue is towels and jeans coming out damp after a full cycle, so you run it twice. Then the dryer cabinet gets hot to the touch, the laundry room feels humid, and you start smelling something scorched. Go outside and check the hood while the dryer runs. Weak airflow, a flap that barely lifts, or lint caked around the opening means the duct is loaded.

What happens during the visit, from arrival to finish?
We pull the dryer out, disconnect the transition hose, and look at the whole path before touching anything. Then a rotating brush on a flexible rod goes through the duct, usually from the inside, while a vacuum catches what comes loose. We work the exterior hood too, clear the flap, and check the rim-joist penetration on basement runs for gaps or crushed sections. The dryer goes back, we run it, and we measure airflow at the hood so you can see the difference. Anything we find damaged gets shown to you before we leave.

How long will I be without my laundry room?
A straightforward job runs under an hour. Long horizontal basement runs in older Bridgewater colonials and ranches take longer because there are more feet of duct and often an elbow or two near the rim joist. Second-floor and townhouse runs that climb through framing to a roof or gable cap can stretch past ninety minutes, especially if the roof termination needs clearing from above. If we find a nest or a collapsed section, we tell you the added time before we continue.

What makes one dryer vent job cost more than another?
Length and shape of the run drive it. A short basement duct straight out through the rim joist is the simplest thing we do. A second-floor laundry venting up through framing to a roof cap costs more because it takes ladder work, roof access, and more rod to reach the far end. Crushed flexible duct that has to come out, a nest packed behind the hood, or a termination buried under snow and ice in February all add labor. We look at your actual run first, tell you what it needs, and you hear the number before we start.

How do I know the duct is the problem and not the machine?
Here is a quick test. Pull the duct off the back of the dryer and run a short cycle venting straight into the room. If clothes dry at a normal pace, the machine is fine and the duct is choked. If it still takes forever, the issue is inside the dryer, usually a worn heating element, a thermal fuse, or a tired blower wheel. We tell you honestly which one it is, and we do not charge you to clean a vent that was never the cause.

Does it matter whether the duct is rigid metal or the flexible kind?
It matters a lot. Rigid smooth-wall metal has straight interior walls, so lint keeps moving and a brush can clean it fully. Flexible foil and plastic accordion duct has ridges that grab lint, and it sags, kinks, and gets crushed when a dryer is shoved back against the wall. We see plenty of the bad stuff in split-level mudrooms and garage-corner laundry spots where the dryer sits tight to a corner. If yours is foil or plastic, we will say so and recommend rigid pipe with a short semi-rigid transition at the machine.

There is a bird or animal nest in my vent. Can you handle that?
Yes, and we see it most in spring when starlings and house sparrows work the wooded ridges around Bridgewater Township looking for a warm cavity. A broken or missing hood flap is an open invitation, and gable and roof terminations get hit most. We remove the nest and all the packed debris, clean the duct behind it, and then install a proper hood with a working flap or a guard so it does not refill next season. Rodent nests closer to the rim joist get the same treatment plus a look at the surrounding seal.

My duct run is longer than it should be. Any way to fix that?
Often yes. Every elbow adds resistance equal to several feet of straight pipe, so sometimes the fix is just removing two unnecessary turns rather than moving the whole run. In basement laundry setups we can sometimes find a shorter path to an exterior wall. For second-floor laundry in the newer colonials and townhomes, where a long vertical climb is built into the framing, an inline booster fan is usually the practical answer. We measure the real run, count the bends, and tell you which approach fits your house.

Can you come out today, and how far do you travel?
Same-day slots are usually open, especially if you call in the morning. We cover Bridgewater Township and the surrounding Somerset County towns across central New Jersey, Raritan Valley, where the North and South Branches of the Raritan River meet. That includes the neighborhoods on the rolling terrain between the Watchung Mountains and the river floodplain, and the townhouse and condo clusters along Routes 22, 202/206 and 287. If a dryer has stopped drying altogether, say so when you call and we will move you up.
